ABA Therapy

Applied Behaviour Analysis is an approach for influencing socially important behaviour through the identification of environmental factors and use of techniques to change behaviour.

It involves assessment of your child’s behaviour skills to formulate a comprehensive plan to support alleviation of challenging behaviour and development of alternative more appropriate skills in place of this challenging behaviour. This is completed by a Board Certified Behaviour Analyst.

Following an initial assessment with your child an individualised therapy plan is written that includes targets across language, social, self help, play and academic skills. Our experienced ABA therapists implement your child’s plan under close supervision of the Board Certified Behaviour Analyst.

Speech & Language Therapy

Speech and language therapy is a therapeutic intervention that is implemented by a Speech and Language Therapist (SLT). SLTs are professionals who work with children, teens and adults in developing their speech, communication, social and swallowing skills. SLTs work directly with clients, families and carers to support development of these skills.

Parent Training Sessions

This type of therapy is suitable for parents of children who have behaviour concerns and for early language learners/ students with communication difficulties. Here your therapist will guide you in following through on a range of skills to support your child’s needs. This may include building on attention and listening, increasing your child’s responding in work and play interactions and supporting communication and replacement behaviours.

This approach is also suitable for children that need support with self -help skills and daily living skills e.g. toilet training, eating and drinking.

Please consult with your therapist if you are unsure which form of online therapy will suit your child or you have any other questions. In certain situations, online therapy will not be suitable for your child. If this is the case further recommendations will be made to support you and your child at home.

The Process

Once therapy has been recommended for your child, the therapist will outline a plan of what will happen across the therapy sessions. Generally, the first 1-2 sessions is spent supporting the development of rapport and instructional control between you and your child. This can involve identifying and using preferred activities and reinforcers in the session. This helps to build up rapport between you and your child and supports listening and following instructions.

Some other techniques that are taught at this time include use of visual supports, modifying the language of instruction you use, the frequency and use of reinforcement, using token systems, understanding why behaviour happens and setting realistic expectations in the teaching session.

In supporting you in building up your child’s attention and listening skills the number of instructions and demands that are presented to your child will increase over the course of the sessions. This will be based on the therapy plan that has already been outlined for your child as part of their therapy programme.

Parent Committment

To maximize success with this approach, we request that parents commit to a minimum of 10 therapy sessions where a parent consultation approach will be followed. This will allow sufficient teaching time to explain the rationale behind certain skills, model these skills for you (through a video interface), allow you time to practice the skills and deliver feedback to you. The aim is that the more repeated practice that can be completed, with specific feedback, the more competent you will be at implementing the tasks when you are working with your child independently.

Following on from that the initial block of sessions, the therapist will take more of an active role in delivering instructions to your child. This will be completed over the laptop/ mobile phone screen. You may still need to be involved in delivering prompts and reinforcement to your child. The suitability of moving on to this format of therapy will be discussed with you in advance of starting this approach.

Online Therapy

Online therapy enables you to get professional therapeutic input for your child via the internet at home.

We currently provide: speech and language therapy, occupational therapy and applied behaviour analysis online.

Therapy takes place through a live video portal. Online therapy is the same as face-to-face therapy but instead of being in the same room, you will see each other on your computer or tablet screen. This allows you to schedule a therapy session at a time that is convenient from the comfort of your home. This flexible approach saves time on commuting to clinics and therapy centres and enables greater involvement in therapy sessions. By working closely with one of our professionals we aim to provide you with the skills necessary to support development of your child’s skills at home.

In situations where further support is needed or conventional face to face therapy is deemed more suitable, a recommendation will be made by your therapist regarding more suitable options.
