Psychological Assessment
Childhood and adolescence can be a whirlwind of emotions and transitions. Whether it’s big feelings, behavioural shifts, or struggles at home or school, these years can bring a range of challenges. Sometimes it’s hard to know what’s going on beneath the surface, and as a parent or caregiver finding the right support can feel challenging. That’s where we come in.
At Inspire Therapy, our psychologist works closely with families to gently explore these difficulties and support you and your child in navigating this together. We provide psychological support for children and adolescents experiencing a range of emotional and mental health concerns. Whether it’s anxiety, low mood, emotional regulation difficulties, school stress, or social challenges, our work is grounded in empathy and clinical expertise. We collaborate with parents and caregivers to build a shared understanding of your child's needs and create meaningful, individualised support.
Our holistic approach to therapy is centered on nurturing each child’s emotional well-being and overall development. Drawing from a range of therapeutic methods, including Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Compassion-Focused Therapy (CFT), and play-based techniques, we tailor our support to meet the unique needs of every young person. Above all, our goal is to create a safe, validating space where children feel seen and heard, and empowered to grow into their authentic selves.
Neurodevelopmental Assessment
In addition to cognitive and educational assessments, we also offer neurodevelopmental evaluations to support children and adolescents with learning, behavioural, and emotional development. These assessments help explore neurodiversity and assess for Autism or ADHD, providing clarity around your child’s developmental profile and supporting tailored pathways for growth.
Autism Assessment
Overview
Autism assessments explore whether a child or adolescent meets the criteria for an autism diagnosis. We use a compassionate, strengths-based approach grounded in neuro affirmative principles—recognising neurodiversity as a natural variation in how people experience the world.
We look across a range of areas, including social communication, sensory processing, emotional regulation, and play or interests. We gather input from both home and school settings, ensuring a comprehensive and balanced view of your child’s profile.
When Might an Autism Assessment Be Helpful?
Parents may seek additional guidance when they notice consistent differences in how their child interacts with others, processes sensory input, or expresses their interests. For example, some children may have difficulty reading social cues or making friends, while others may show strong preferences for routines or experience sensory sensitivities. Every child develops in their own way, and these differences don’t always point to a diagnosis. If you’re unsure or curious, our team is here to listen, explore your concerns, and help determine whether an assessment would be helpful at this time.
What’s Involved?
- Parent Intake Consultation
We begin by learning about your child’s developmental, social, and emotional history. - Questionnaires
We gather perspectives from both parents and teachers using standardised tools (e.g., SRS-2). - Direct Assessment
A structured session using the ADOS-2 allows us to observe social communication and interaction in a supportive way. - Additional Parental Consult
A structured clinical tool, such as the ADI-R (Autism Diagnostic Interview – Revised), is conducted to gather detailed information about your child’s early development and current strengths/needs. - Feedback and Report
You’ll receive a comprehensive written report, and we’ll then meet with you to go through the findings and discuss whether your child’s experiences and behaviors align with a diagnosis of Autism. Our goal is to help you understand what this means for your child and how to best support them moving forward. We also collaborate with your child’s school to ensure they receive the appropriate support within their learning environment.
ADHD Assessment
Overview
ADHD is a neurodevelopmental condition that can affect attention, energy levels, and the ability to regulate impulses or emotions. Our assessments are designed to help families understand their child’s needs and identify strategies that support their focus, self-regulation, and confidence—both in school and at home.
When Might an ADHD Assessment Be Helpful?
Many parents begin to consider an assessment when they notice their child having difficulty staying focused, following instructions, or managing emotions. Some children may seem constantly active, while others appear daydreamy or struggle to complete tasks. These patterns may be affecting school performance or relationships, and parents often want to understand what’s behind the behavior so they can better support their child. It’s important to highlight that every child has a unique profile — and attention, activity levels, and focus can vary widely. An assessment can help explore whether these challenges are part of a neurodevelopmental difference like ADHD and guide supportive strategies for home and school.
What’s Involved?
- Parent Intake Consultation
We discuss your child’s history and current challenges, gathering relevant background information. - Behavior Rating Scales
Standardized ADHD rating scales (such as the Conners 4) are completed by parents and teachers to assess attention, hyperactivity, and emotional regulation. - School Observation (If appropriate)
A school observation may be included to better understand your child’s cognitive profile and overall engagement within the classroom environment. - Cognitive Testing
To rule out other conditions, we may include cognitive/educational assessments that assess learning difficulties or other contributing factors. Each assessment process will vary depending on the presenting needs of each child. - Feedback and Report
We provide a comprehensive report outlining the results, diagnosis, and recommended strategies for supporting your child at school and home. We also collaborate closely with your child’s school to support a smooth transfer of strategies into the classroom environment.
Cognitive and Educational Assessment
At Inspire Therapy, we are committed to supporting the cognitive, emotional, and developmental growth of children and adolescents through our psychology services. We offer educational and cognitive assessments that help identify each child’s unique learning strengths and challenges, ensuring they receive the appropriate support on their educational journey. Whether a child is facing difficulties with learning, experiencing developmental differences, or simply needs a deeper understanding of their intellectual profile, our team is here to guide both parents and schools toward the right strategies and supports.
Understanding Your Child’s Learning Profile
Our cognitive and educational assessments provide valuable insight into how your child thinks, learns, and processes information. These assessments are designed to explore intellectual abilities, academic skills, and developmental progress, offering a clearer picture of your child’s learning style and the areas where they may benefit from additional support. We look at key areas such as memory, attention, reasoning, problem-solving, and language skills. With this information, we can help families and educators tailor learning approaches to support each child’s growth and wellbeing.
When Might a Cognitive Assessment Be Helpful?
Families and schools often consider a cognitive assessment when there are questions about a child’s development or learning needs. You might be wondering whether your child is reaching their full potential, or perhaps you’re noticing specific difficulties in areas like attention, language, or academic progress. Sometimes a child may be struggling to keep up in school or may excel in certain areas but seem disengaged in others. There may be developmental differences, such as delays in language or challenges with memory and concentration. In other cases, parents or teachers may be curious to better understand a child’s strengths and challenges in order to provide more personalised learning strategies. Whether you are seeking support, answers, or simply more clarity, our team is here to guide you through the process.
What to Expect During a Cognitive Assessment
Each assessment at Inspire Clinic is thoughtfully structured and personalised to meet the needs of the individual child or adolescent.
- Parent Consultation
We begin with a detailed conversation to understand your child’s background, development, academic journey, and any concerns. This helps us tailor the assessment to their specific needs. - First Testing
Session Using internationally recognised tools like the WISC-V (Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children – Fifth Edition), we explore areas such as reasoning, memory, and processing speed. Through a series of interactive tasks and puzzles, we gain insight into how your child learns and thinks. - Second Testing Session
The second session typically involves the WIAT-4 (Wechsler Individual Achievement Test – Fourth Edition), which assesses academic skills such as reading, writing, math, and oral expression. This helps us identify your child’s current academic level and any areas where extra support may be helpful. - Additional Sessions (if needed)
Depending on the child’s needs, we may recommend further sessions to explore areas such as executive functioning, language development, or visual-motor integration, helping us form a complete developmental profile. - Report Preparation
A comprehensive report is prepared based on the assessment findings. It outlines your child’s strengths and areas for support, with practical recommendations for home and school. - Feedback Session
We meet with you to walk through the results, explain your child’s profile in an accessible way, and discuss tailored strategies to help them thrive.

Parent Training Sessions
This type of therapy is suitable for parents of children who have behaviour concerns and for early language learners/ students with communication difficulties. Here your therapist will guide you in following through on a range of skills to support your child’s needs. This may include building on attention and listening, increasing your child’s responding in work and play interactions and supporting communication and replacement behaviours.
This approach is also suitable for children that need support with self -help skills and daily living skills e.g. toilet training, eating and drinking.
Please consult with your therapist if you are unsure which form of online therapy will suit your child or you have any other questions. In certain situations, online therapy will not be suitable for your child. If this is the case further recommendations will be made to support you and your child at home.
The Process
Once therapy has been recommended for your child, the therapist will outline a plan of what will happen across the therapy sessions. Generally, the first 1-2 sessions is spent supporting the development of rapport and instructional control between you and your child. This can involve identifying and using preferred activities and reinforcers in the session. This helps to build up rapport between you and your child and supports listening and following instructions.
Some other techniques that are taught at this time include use of visual supports, modifying the language of instruction you use, the frequency and use of reinforcement, using token systems, understanding why behaviour happens and setting realistic expectations in the teaching session.
In supporting you in building up your child’s attention and listening skills the number of instructions and demands that are presented to your child will increase over the course of the sessions. This will be based on the therapy plan that has already been outlined for your child as part of their therapy programme.
Parent Committment
To maximize success with this approach, we request that parents commit to a minimum of 10 therapy sessions where a parent consultation approach will be followed. This will allow sufficient teaching time to explain the rationale behind certain skills, model these skills for you (through a video interface), allow you time to practice the skills and deliver feedback to you. The aim is that the more repeated practice that can be completed, with specific feedback, the more competent you will be at implementing the tasks when you are working with your child independently.
Following on from that the initial block of sessions, the therapist will take more of an active role in delivering instructions to your child. This will be completed over the laptop/ mobile phone screen. You may still need to be involved in delivering prompts and reinforcement to your child. The suitability of moving on to this format of therapy will be discussed with you in advance of starting this approach.
Online Therapy
Online therapy enables you to get professional therapeutic input for your child via the internet at home.
We currently provide: speech and language therapy, occupational therapy and applied behaviour analysis online.
Therapy takes place through a live video portal. Online therapy is the same as face-to-face therapy but instead of being in the same room, you will see each other on your computer or tablet screen. This allows you to schedule a therapy session at a time that is convenient from the comfort of your home. This flexible approach saves time on commuting to clinics and therapy centres and enables greater involvement in therapy sessions. By working closely with one of our professionals we aim to provide you with the skills necessary to support development of your child’s skills at home.
In situations where further support is needed or conventional face to face therapy is deemed more suitable, a recommendation will be made by your therapist regarding more suitable options.
